Driver helps visually impaired charity win £2,000

A BRISTOL bus driver has helped secure £2,000 for a support group set up to help the families of blind and visually impaired children.

David Jones, 33, who lives in Stapleton, applied for funds from the FirstGroup Charity and Sponsorship committee after seeing a poster at work.

His son Hayden, six, has a condition called nystagmus which means his vision is a bit wobbly and he has difficulties with his peripheral vision and perception of depth.

First has donated the money to LOOK West which will use it to ensure families of blind and visually impaired children in the West can enjoy holidays in Dorset, using a specially adapted caravan owned and operated by the support group.

The LOOK West support group owns a caravan in Weymouth Bay, but having spent money adapting it for use by blind and partially sighted children and their families, the group was struggling to cover the cost of the annual caravan site fees.

Thanks to the donation the group can cover the site fees, recouping the remaining monies needed from the fees they charge families for using the caravan during the summer.

Mr Jones, who has been working for First as a driver for nearly eight years, said: "I decided to apply to the FirstGroup Charity and Sponsorship committee for these funds when I saw a poster up at work. I was thrilled to bits when I realised we'd received the full £2,000 we'd asked for; it will make such a tremendous difference to many families from the West of England who have blind or visually impaired children.

"Everyone loves going on holiday but for families like mine there is more to think about than simply where to go. We need to find places that are suitable for our family and particularly which can cater for our little boy's needs."

Jenny MacLeod, general manager of First in Bristol, Somerset and Avon, said: "By donating £2,000 to LOOK West we have enabled families of visually impaired children to get away from the hustle and bustle of their daily lives, enjoying some quality time together in a particularly lovely part of the world."
