Bus drivers think pink for cancer cause

TWO bus drivers from Weston- super-Mare have dyed their hair bright pink to raise money for a breast cancer charity.

Steve Hodgetts, 65, and Malcolm Day, 50, both volunteered to have their hair coloured as part of an event to raise money for Breast Cancer Campaign.

The colourful duo, both of whom drive for bus operator First, hope their efforts will raise more than £200 for the charity.

Steve, who is due to retire at the end of March, normally has short, white hair and the colour change has proved a hit with passengers.

Steve, a driver with first for nine years, said: "I'm not sure that pink is my colour but if people look up and realise that we're doing this for a really good and worthwhile cause, then it will all be worth it.

"I hope to raise a substantial amount on the back of this event as breast cancer is an illness that directly and indirectly affects a lot of people, and anything we can do to help support research into the causes of it will be really worthwhile."

Malcolm, a driver of six years, added: "When I heard what Steve was doing I offered to take part too to give him some moral support."

Regulars at the Anchor Head Hotel in the resort, managed by Malcolm's wife, are also holding fundraising events to bolster funds further.

Jenny MacLeod, general manager for First in Bristol, Somerset and Avon, says: "It's not normal for our drivers to sport pink hairdos so we expect they'll stand out a bit, but this is a bit of fun for a good cause and for these reasons we're pleased to support it."

Anyone wanting to support Steve and Malcolm in their fundraising efforts should contact the Waverley Pub in Weston-super-Mare as the sponsored hair dye is part of a series of events they are organising to raise funds for Breast Cancer Campaign.
