Weston looking to keep it tight

WESTON-super-Mare manager Craig Laird is promising blood, sweat and tears rather than fancy football as his team seek to climb the Blue Square South table.

And the Scot will make no apologies if the Seagulls attach more importance to trying to keep a clean sheet than scoring goals at Chelmsford tomorrow.

Normally an advocate of free-flowing attacking football, Laird ordered an immediate return to basics after seeing his side lose three of their opening four fixtures and concede eight goals in the process.

A safety-first approach paid instant dividends, Weston returning from Hornchurch with a goalless draw and then keeping another clean sheet when chalking up their first win of the campaign at home to Staines.

"We have concentrated on not conceding goals," said Laird, whose team is now unbeaten in three games.

"It may not always be pretty to watch, but it is what we need right now if we are going to collect points and climb the table.

"Keeping that clean sheet at Hornchurch provided us with the platform we needed to go and win the next game. Of course, we like to entertain, but it is more important to keep ourselves in games and give ourselves a chance of winning."

Influential centre-back Matt Villis is again likely to be missing through injury, but Ben Kirk is available after serving a three-match ban and the Seagulls will be further bolstered by the return of Jamie Price.
