Women wear hijabs in support of slain Iraqi woman

[...] the office manager at Bonita Valley Adventist Church in National City, Calif., will don an Islamic head scarf to support the family and friends of Shaima Alawadi, the Iraqi immigrant and mother of five who died March 24, three days after being beaten in her home in El Cajon, Calif. Supporters worry that because of anti-Muslim sentiment in the U.S., Alawadi's slaying, which many believe was a hate crime, would be overlooked. The hijab has been seen as a mark of modesty, oppression, religious identity and controversy ? and now it is becoming a universal symbol of solidarity, much as the hoodie has become a sign of support for Trayvon Martin, the unarmed Florida teenager killed by a neighborhood security guard.
