Do the facts justify it? (Page A1, Monday), I keep reading about the long lines at the Department of Public Safety offices making it hard for people to get photo ID in order to vote. [...] LBJ continued his political career by being elected to the Texas Senate with the help of dead people who voted. The article "For some refiners, the price of gasoline is too low" (Page D1, Thursday) makes it sound like refiners want gasoline prices to go higher, when in fact we would like to see the price of crude oil go lower to hold down gasoline prices. Refiners collect only 6 cents to pay for all their fuel manufacturing costs and to generate the earnings they need to stay in business and preserve the jobs of their workers. The best way to increase the U.S. oil supply would be to get federal approval for increased production in our country and for construction of the Keystone XL pipeline to bring Canadian oil to refineries in Texas and elsewhere along the Gulf Coast. Exports of surplus diesel (which has to be manufactured whenever gasoline is made) keep American refineries running, support American jobs and generate tax revenue. Mandating higher reserves would require the construction of additional gasoline storage capacity, raising gasoline manufacturing costs.
