A TEMPORARY chief executive has been appointed to run Bristol City Council until November.
Graham Sims has taken over the key job from Jan Ormondroyd who announced her retirement last month.
Mr Sims already works at the council at director level and his appointment is an interim measure until the city's first elected mayor takes up the post. It is still not clear whether the new mayor will decide to have a chief executive but the Conservative group has already said it would axe the role.
Mrs Ormondroyd, who announced she was stepping down to spend more time with her terminally ill husband, was paid around £190,000 a year.
Mr Sims, who has held the post of deputy chief executive, will earn £150,000 a year.
The salary has been reduced to reflect the current market conditions.
A spokesman for the council said: "The interim chief executive will act up until Christmas to allow the incoming mayor elected on November 15 enough time to decide if he or she would like to recruit a permanent successor and, if so, on what terms."
Mr Sims, who has lived in south Bristol throughout his life, has until now had responsibility for planning, transport, economic and cultural services and to give strategic leadership to improving neighbourhoods across the city.
He has also been involved with the Safer Bristol and the Neighbourhood Partnerships schemes.
Mr Sims said: "It has been a privilege working for Jan Ormondroyd and she will be a very hard act to follow.
"The next few months will be challenging as we make the transition to a mayor, but it offers huge opportunities for the council and the city as a whole, and I look forward immensely to playing my part as interim chief executive."
